Diana ""Dee'' Peterson, 60, of Grand Marais, Minn., went to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 21, surrounded by her loving family, she departed this life from Solvay Hospice House in Duluth, where she was compassionately cared for due to pancreatic cancer. She was born Nov. 22, 1947, to Harold and Mildred (Visser) Slawson in Waterloo, Iowa. She graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1966. Dee married Jerry Peterson on June 22, 1971, and they began a life together that was filled with love and blessed by the birth of two daughters. Jerry and Dee started Eliminator Refuse Co. in 1970, and they enjoyed operating the business together and appreciated their trusted employees. They lived in Shell Rock, Iowa, until selling their business and moving to Grand Marais in 1999. For several years, Dee worked at Bearskin Lodge as the front desk manager, where she provided extraordinary service to the guests she assisted. She was active in Girl Scouts for over 40 years, serving as a troop leader and as an officer on the Conestoga Council Board of Directors. She volunteered countless hours through her service on various boards and committees in the Shell Rock area. Above all, Dee was a devoted wife, mother, and Nana. She built her life around her family. She was a mom to everyone. Dee will be remembered for her gracious and giving manner. She opened her home to any and all who needed comfort, care, or company. Dee adored children, especially her grandchildren, and will be remembered for her funny stories, shaped pancakes, and huge hugs. She enjoyed traveling and was always ready for a backroad adventure with Jerry. She was preceded in death by her father, Harold and brother, John. Dee will be greatly missed by her husband, Jerry; daughters, Stacey (Jes) Cisneros of East Dundee, Ill., and Sara (Tim) Groen of North Branch, Minn.; grandchildren, Andy and Ellie Groen; mother, Mildred Slawson of Cedar Falls, Iowa; brother, Kelly (Cathy) Slawson of Minneapolis; sister, Jane (Chris) Stout of Ankeny, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews. VISITATION:5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 26, in Cavallin Funeral Home, Grand Marais, and continuing from 12 noon until the 1 p.m. service on Friday, June 27, in First Baptist Church, Grand Marais. Burial will be at Maple Hill Cemetery.
