Margaret Ann "Maggie" Brent was born on October 31,1851 in Holly, Texas. She was the fourth out of seven children born to Cader Buxton Brent, a plantation owner and wife Rebecca Cottrell Speer. Maggie came from a very wealthy family, her parent's owned most of the land in the Holly and Lovelady area. Her father Cader owned over one hundred slaves on his plantation but secretly treated them well, and then freed all of them after the Civil war.
Maggie married Emmett Alexander "Alex" Standley in about, 1870 in Trinity, Texas and had nine children:
Sarah born in 1871 in Trinity,
John A. born in 1872 in Trinity, Tx.,
Sally born in 1874 in Lovelady,Tx. died in 1980 in Lovelady,Tx.,
Walter B. born December 1876 in Trinity, Tx. Named in honor of her brother Charles Walter Brent.
Needham A. born in 1878 in Trinity,Tx. Named in honor of Emmett's father Needham.
Luther born in March 1881 in Trinity,Tx.
Lena Indiana born in March 18,1883 in Farm House Bushy Creek, Tx. died May 2,1974 in Houston,Tx. Named in honor of Emmett's sister Indiana Standley Spear.
Will "Willie" born in 1887 in Trinity,Tx. died in 1970 in Houston,Tx.
And my great grandfather Earnest Benjamen born on September 14, 1890 in Trinity,Tx. died on Jan.1,1968 in Spring, Tx.
The same year her last child was born, her husband Emmett died in 1890. Leaving her widowed and having to raise her four smaller children Luther, Lena, Will and Earnest. Maggie was able to support herself and children on her own after her husband passed away, and she never remarried. Her youngest son Earnest named one of his daughter's after her. She must have been quite a woman.
Maggie passed away on Febuary 25,1928 in Houston, Texas at the age of 76. She was preceded in death by her husband Emmett A. Standley, mother Rebecca C. Brent, father Cader B. Brent. and brother James Agusta Brent.
She is survived by grandaughter's Margaret "Maggie" and Esther Standley, grandson Earnest "Bunk" Standley, and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She's laid to rest by her daughter Lena and family at Hollywood Cemetery.
