Luther was a World War I veteran having enlisted into the U.S. Army on 25 May 1918 at Charleston. He was part of the 29 Co 8 Tng Bn to 25 Oct 1918 and Co H 9 Inf to 25 Apr 1919. He fought at Argonne Meuse, the final Allies offense of the war. He was shot in the back the day before the war ended.
