John Lester "Big John" Obergfell, 50, of Geraldine, a Sidney native and farm hand, died Friday June 20, 2008 of injuries he received in a farm accident near Geraldine.

John was born Oct. 26, 1957, in Sidney to Jerry and Nancy (Putnam) Obergfell. He was raised in Sidney, where he attended grade school at Brorson, and then graduated from Sidney High School in 1975. He lettered in wrestling and track. He worked for Don Franz right after he graduated, then he went to work driving truck and custom-cutting with Don Bolstad out of Medicine Lake until July 1979.

He married Maxine Hansonl on July 14, 1979, in Sidney.
They moved to Lambert and worked for John Prevost until July 1990. They moved to the Fort Benton area and worked for George and Joan Lippert until October 1993. They then moved to Geraldine and worked for Gordon Muir until April 2004. He then worked for Marshall Larsen until 2005, before going to work for Mark, Ben and Marilyn Lund until his death.

He was very proud of his family. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, cross-stitching, woodworking, horseshoe crafting and spending any extra time with his kids, whom he loved his kids.

He is survived by his wife, Maxine; his daughter, Keela Barnes of Great Falls; his sons, Joshua Obergfell and his wife, Amanda, of Havre, Dallas Obergfell and Zane Obergfell, both of Geraldine; his parents, Jerry and Nancy Obergfell of Sidney; his sister, Paula (Keith) Bostrom of Sidney; his brother, Rocky (Kathy) Obergfell of Sidney; his father-in-law, Maxim Hansonl (Lila) of Shepherd; a brother-in-law, Robert (Ronna) Hansonl of Marshall, Minn; sisters-in-law Brenda Hansonl of Dickinson, N.D., and Daniela (Dennis) Blowers of Shepherd; along with nieces and nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, John and Beulah Obergfell, Lester and Lucy Putnam, Hiram and Charlotte Baney and Daniel and Opal Hansonl, and his brother-in-law, Galen Blowers.

Burial will take place in Geraldine Cemetery.
