"Father"

Bakersfield Californian, March 20, 1933: LEONIDES CASTRO CALLED BY DEATH

Resident of Kern Since 1867 Passes; Was Rancher and Farmer Many Years

Death early today claimed the life of Leonides "Lee" Castro, 76, eldest son of one of Kern county's first families, and a resident of the county since 1867.

Born May 18, 1856, in Sonora, Mexico, Mr. Castro was the oldest of the 12 children of Thomas and Concepcion Castro, and was brought by them to this section of the country two years after the close of the Civil War.

His mother was a Coronado and he was a cousin of Santiago Coronado, who preceded him in death by but 48 hours.

Young Lee Castro worked for his father until he was 25 years of age. His father had purchased 160 acres in the Panama district south of Bakersfield and in 1867 Lee and his brothers were taken into partnership.

Farming, however, proved too quiet for the adventuresome youth and he with drew from the partnership to enter the employ of Miller and Lux as a wild horse breaker. He remained in that work for ten years then engaged in the stock business for Kern County Land Company until 1890 when he bought 20 acres of land five miles south of Bakersfield. From time to time he added to this and at one time owned 120 acres devoted entirely to general farming.

The oldest canal in Kern county, the Castro ditch, was constructed by his father.

Lee Castro was married in Sacramento in 1880 to Miss Dixie Cage, native daughter of Napa county.
