Educated at the Georgetown University Medical School, he was the first to describe and successfully treat North American hookworm in 1899. He lead a treatment campaign to treat people afflicted with the parasite, and ultimately cured about 300,000 people. He was the founding member of the Puerto Rico Anemia Commission, serving from 1904 to 1906. He served in the Spanish American War. He wrote his biography, A Soldier in Science, Anemia in Puerto Rico and Uncinariasis in puerto Rico. His remains were re-interred on April 20, 1954 from the Ft. Brooke Military Cemetery.
