Fred J. Bergschneider, 82, of Jacksonville, died Saturday, June 21, 2008, at Barton W. Stone Home in Jacksonville. He was born February 14, 1926, in Franklin, the son of Fred and Ruth Votsmier Bergschneider. He married Ruby Ann Martin on August 27, 1947 at Cathedral of Immaculate Conception in Springfield, and she survives.

He is also survived by seven children, Susan (husband, Bob) Gabriel of Broomfield, Colorado, David (wife, Dawn) Bergschneider of Springfield, Greg (wife, Sherri) Bergschneider of Bloomington, Debbie (husband, Cary) Graus of Broomfield, Colorado, Cindy (husband, Greg) Kindred of Savannah, Georgia, Marti (wife, Laurie) Bergschneider of Decatur, and Amy (husband, Mike) Mann of Jacksonville; sixteen grandchildren, Jennifer and Stephen Gabriel, Alec, Bryant, and Cale Bergschneider, Brandon and Brady Bergschneider, Brian and Kelly Graus, Sarah and Katie Kindred, Hayden and Carson Bergschneider, and Jake, Alaina, and Gabrielle Mann; two sisters, Marcella Smith of Clermont, Florida and Helen Little of Naperville, and one brother, Richard "Dick" (wife, Rosemary) Bergschneider of Franklin. He was preceded in death by one son, Jeff Bergschneider (surviving wife, Corina Scoggins of Austin, Texas,) one infant son Steven, one sister, Agnes, and three brothers, Jerald Bergschneider, Albert Bergschneider, and Jim Bergschneider.

Before retiring in 2004, Mr. Bergschneider, along with his wife, owned and operated several businesses. He farmed between Waverly and Franklin until 1967, and later operated Moffet Farm Supply and Bergschneider Equipment Sales in Jacksonville. The couple owned the Highlander Center on East Morton Road for over 30 years as well as the Wash World 104 Laundromat in Auburn. Prior to his marriage, he served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. Mr. Bergschneider was a member of Church of Our Saviour and the Our Saviour Minute Men, and a member of American Legion, Post 1089, in Franklin. He was a former member and past president of Franklin Lions Club, and started the Drive-In at Franklin's Fourth of July Burgoo, and coined the slogan "Everybody Goes to Franklin on the 4th." Also as a Lions Club member, he organized a square dance group of second graders from Waverly Grade School that performed at the Illinois State Fair, Fort Madison Rodeo, and many other locations. Mr. Bergschneider particularly enjoyed a trip he took with his wife to Hawaii, to revisit Pearl Harbor, where he was stationed during World War II. Above all, he was a devoted family man who enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Services were entrusted to Williamson Funeral Home of Jacksonville, Illinois.
