Roman Catholic Cardinal. Vorkova born Julijans Vaivods entered seminary in St. Petersburg, Russia, later furthering his studies at the theological faculty of Riga. Ordained priest on April 7, 1918, between the latter year and 1944 he rendered services in Liepaja, serving as diocesan chancellor, curial judge and vicar general. Named Domestic Prelate of His Holiness on July 4, 1949, he was tried and sentenced to forced labor in concentration camp in Mordovia from 1958 till 1960 by the Communist regime. Vicar general of the diocese of Riga, he attended the Second Vatican Council by Papal invitation. Appointed apostolic administrator 'ad nutum Sanctæ Sedis' of Riga and Liepaja on November 10, 1964, he received his episcopal consecration with the titular see of Macriana Maggiore eight days later inside the chapel of Our Lady of Czestochowa of the Vatican City from Cardinal Paolo Marella. President of the Episcopal Conference of Latvia, Pope John Paul II created him cardinal priest in the consistory of February 2, 1983 with the title of Ss. Quattro Coronati, becoming thus the first Latvian Cardinal. Passing away in Riga on May 24, 1990, he was originally buried in the garden adjacent to the minor basilica of Aglona, being eventually transferred to the crypt of the basilica itself on June 1, 1993 when reconstruction works were eventually concluded. Vaivods authored various publications on the history of the Catholic church and the history of Latvia and was decorated among others with the Order of Merit of Saint Vladimir and the Order of Merit of the Republic of Latvia.
