JAMES H. COFER, 82, of MIDDLETOWN, formerly of Long Branch, expired on Saturday, Dec. 1. Born in New York City, he was a lifelong resident of Long Branch, where he attended public schools and was a three-letter man. He later graduated from the American Academy of Mortuary Science. Mr. Cofer enlisted in the U.S. Army at 17 and served in World War II from 1942 to 1946, receiving numerous medals and honors for bravery.

His tour of duty included the European Theater resulting in three Bronze Stars for the North Africa, Italy and France Campaigns. A disabled veteran, Mr. Cofer received the New Jersey State Distinguished Medal and a Certificate of Appreciation for the Liberation of France. James Cofer was a Long Branch police officer for approximately 11 years and in 1960 began his lifelong vocation as a mortician, working for the James H. Beckett Funeral Home, Newark, and the F. Leon Harris Funeral Home, Red Bank. In 1976, he founded Cofer Memorial Home. Mr. Cofer served as a Long Branch councilman from 1973 to 1989, holding office as vice president for two terms. In addition, Mr. Cofer served on various committees, the Monmouth County Blood Bank, Public Health Nurses Association, and as an officer of the Red Cross. Honored by the National Conference of Christians and Jews, he was also the recipient of many other awards. James Cofer was a former trustee and usher at Second Baptist Church, where he was baptized.

Mr. Cofer was the son of the late James Cofer and Sarah Beckett Cofer of Long Branch; and brother to the late Harold Cofer of Philadelphia. Left to grieve him are his beloved wife of 61 years, Marion "Billie" Willis Cofer; a faithful son, James H. Cofer III of Red Bank; and an adoring daughter, Linda Sarah Cofer Hawkins of West Orange. He is survived by a sister, Martha Pattisall; two brothers, Leroy and Herbert Cofer of Long Branch; two sisters-in-law, Jane Cofer and Crystal Cofer; a son-in-law, Eldridge Hawkins, Esq., of West Orange; a daughter-in-law, Shirley Marshall-Cofer of Red Bank; four grandchildren, Officer Eldridge Hawkins II of Orange, Hillary Hawkins of West Orange, and Ashley and Jamie Cofer of Red Bank; and a host of other relatives and friends.

The viewing will be from 10 a.m. Wednesday until the funeral at 11 a.m. at Second Baptist Church, 91 Liberty St., Long Branch. The Rev. Aaron N. Gibson will officiate. Interment will be in Woodbine Cemetery, Oceanport. Cofer Memorial Home, Red Bank, is in charge of arrangements.
