Mrs. Bender was born on May 3, 1917, in Villa Grove, a daughter of Sam and Dollie Kinnard Elder, she married Ralph Emerson Bender on May 13, 1939, in Paris, Ill. He preceded her in death on December 10, 1988. Also preceding Mrs. Bender in death were a son, Larry, three brothers, Robert, George, and Roy "Pat," as well as a sister, Dollie Mae Stowe.
Surviving are a son, Robert Bender of Chicago; a daughter, Gail Porter of Champaign; three grandchildren, Kelly Wright of Lebanon, Ind., Tamara Porter of Savannah, Ga., and Courtney Porter of Champaign; a great-granddaughter, Zoe Sego of Lebanon Ind., and a sister, Irene Reinhart of Tuscola.
Ellene was a 50-year member of the Newman Chapter of The Eastern Star.
She spent a lifetime enjoying her family, gardening, flowers, quilting, and friends. She will be sadly missed by her family who supported her in her wish to remain in her own home for as long as possible, with the help of sitters who were like family to her. She was able to spend all but a few weeks in her home that she and her husband built and raised their three children in.
