At the young age of 16, John traveled from Iowa to the West Coast, working at numerous jobs. In 1943, he worked he was working for the Adhor Dairy in San Fernando Valley in California.
After his return to the family farm near Ashton, John married Phyllis Lamfers on November 27, 1945. He worked as a milk truck driver and they had their first son, John, while living on the Dickey farm.
In 1949, John, Phyllis and young John, moved to Minnesota. After testing the waters in the Norcross and New York Mills areas, the growing family of 9 boys (John, George, Gene, Bill, Mark, Tom, Joe, Tom and Pat) and 2 girls (Jane and Barb) made their final residence outside of Millerville.
John and Phyllis farmed the home place until they both passed away in 1997.
John’s favorite pastime was playing baseball on the local leagues and showed his brute strength at the plate.
It is no secret that John loved to talk… we will always remember the wonderful stories and jokes that he shared with the world. Many an evening was spent listening to Polka Music.
A truly generous man…who truly would give you the shirt off his own back.
