"J.S. Hanna died at his home in this city Sunday, February 20, 1927. Aged 84 years, nine months and 27 days. Death was due to a stroke of paralysis which affected him last week, following his long illness. John Samuel Hanna, the son of Andrew and Margaret McClain Hanna, was born on a farm near Columbia, Boone County, on April 23, 1842, and was reared to young manhood on his father's farm. On February 14, 1865 he married Miss Mariam Keene of the same neighborhood. They lived on a farm in the southern part of Boone County for nine years when they moved to the state of California and lived there for five years. n They moved back to Missouri in the spring of 1880 and located on a farm north of Centralia for thirty-three years. In 1917 Mr. and Mrs. Hanna moved to Centralia where they have resided since. Deceased was the father of four children, namely, Mrs. S. J. Denton, Mrs. Will Rawlings, Alex Hanna and Mrs. George Waggener. His widow and two children, Mrs. Will Rawlings and Mrs. George Waggener survive him. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Mr. Hanna was a grand old gentlemen and a good Christian man. He dealth with everyone in a far, square manner and had the happy faculty of making and holding close, warm friends. He was for many years one of the leading farmers of the "Saline neighborhood", as the section of Audrain County north of Centralia was then called, and his home was one of the hospitalbe hearths of that section.

Mr. Hanna was one of those fine old gentlemen who moved among his fellows with dignity and yet with a sincere and wholehearted friendliness that never failed. He endeared himself to those who knew him because, while unassuming and gentle in his ways, he never failed to speak with certain emphasis against evil and to condemn wrongdoing. A man among men and in his death a chief and a friend has fallen!
We revere his memory because he was our friend and he was always a welcome visitor in the Guard office where he visited us often and gave us the inspiration of his presence and his wise counsel.

Funeral services were conducted at the First Christian church Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock by Pastor Frank B. Ward, assisted by Elder Egan Herndon, after which the body was given in charge of the Masonic Lodge of which Mr. Hanna was an early member, and was buried with Masonic honors in the city cemetery."
