"Mahala Nicholas, living 4 miles north of Gessie, died on January 12, 1889, aged nearly 74 years.  She had been quite an invalid for a number of years past, and for the last 7 months was confined entirely to her bed.

She was a daughter of Richard Shute, of this county, long since deceased, and sister to Ephraim, Daniel, and John Shute, all prominent men in this county.  She was born in Gallia County, OH, and came with her father's family to this county in 1820.  In 1835 she was married to William Nicholas, who, at the age of 80 years, still survives her.  She was the mother of 6 children, 3 of whom are living to mourn for a mother who will never come back to them.

She had been a member of the Methodist Church for more than 30 years, and bore her long and tedious illness with fortitude and Christian resignation.  Her funeral was preached in Howard's Chapel by her pastor, Rev. Mr. Wiley, and was largely attended - many being her friends and neighbors who had known her for more than 30 years." - Newport Hoosier State, Wednesday, January 23, 1889 (Obituary provided by Carolyn Schwab)
