James attended school in Redfield. He joined the United States Air Force in 1960 and was stationed at Lockland Air Force Base in Texas. In 1961, he served in Korea as a petroleum/transport specialist. After his honorable discharge in 1963 he returned to Redfield. He was employed by Wilson Concrete Products, South Dakota Developmental Center-Redfield and Spink County Highway Department. He moved to Moose Lake, MN and was employed by Duluth Public Schools for several years.

James was a member of the Wesleyan Church. He enjoyed landscaping, painting and carpentry work.
