In 1961, he served in Korea as a petroleum/transport specialist. After his honorable discharge in 1963 he returned to Redfield. He was employed by Wilson Concrete Products, South Dakota Developmental Center-Redfield and Spink County Highway Department. He moved to Moose Lake, MN and was employed by Duluth Public Schools for several years.
James was a member of the Wesleyan Church. He enjoyed landscaping, painting and carpentry work.
