OBITUARY: The Manti Messenger Saturday 20 April 1901
Azariah Tuttle Dead
Pioneer, Eighty-Three Years Old
Laid at Rest After Long Illness
Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m., the earthly career of Azariah Tuttle, an old pioneer of
this city passed away, after spending 83 years in the flesh. Mr. Tuttle was born in New
York City, April 20, 1818, and could he have lived until today he would have reached his
eighty-third year. The father of deceased died when Azariah was 9 years of age, and he
commenced work in a printing office about that time to help support the family. Aat 15
years he began to learn the trade of sparmaker. He joined the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints in December, 1837, through the preaching of Parley P. Pratt and Elijah
Fordham. He passed through the persecutions in Farr West & Nauvoo. Mr. Tuttle and family
left Missouri in Bishop Howell's train for Utah, arriving in Provo, Utah, September 15,
1852. October 12th of the same year they were induced to locate in this city through the
influence of Isaac Morley.
The old gentleman passed through and took an active part in the Indian troubles in early
days, being a member of what was then called the Silver Greys.
In early days deceased was a member of the City Council here for several years and was
city watermaster for nearly twenty years.
Deceased leaves a wife who will son reach her eightieth year, and who is quite feeble,
together with four children, Azariah, Horton, both of Emery county, and William and
Abigail Shomaker, wife of Mayor Shomaker, the last two named being residents of this
city. Azariah Tuttle sheriff of Emery county and his brother Horton were here to attend
the funeral which occured Thursday afternoon from our Tabernacle. Many people were in
attendance and many good words of praise were given in behalf of the good and faithful
pioneer.
Deceased has two brothers, his juniors, living in this city, Hon. Luther T. Tuttle and
John Henry Tuttle, both highly respected citizens of this community.
