Benjamin Frank Adkins died at his home in this city Tuesday morning, November 26, 1918, following a short illness with uremia and the infirmities of old age. He had been in failing health for the past three years. "Uncle Frank" as he was familiarly known by his large circle of friends, was born in Pickaway County, Ohio, September 3, 1832 and came to this county with his parents at an early age and where his father became engaged in the buying of cattle for the eastern markets. Mr. Adkins made many trips on foot and on horseback driving cattle overland to and from New York and had many experiences connected with those trips and which he liked to tell about.

Mr. Adkins enlisted in Company C 170th Illinois Infantry on August 12, 1862 as a duty surgeon and served three years. He took part in the siege of Knoxville, with Sherman in the Atlanta campaign, and participated in the battle of Jonesboro; was then sent with General Thomas to aid in the operations against Hood, and fought at Franklin and Nashville. He then rejoined Sherman at Goldsburg NC. Mr. Adkins participated in the grand review in Washington. He received his honorable discharge in June 1865.

On December 6, 1860, he was married to Mrs. Nancy Harris, who died October 17, 1898. After his wife's death, Mr. Adkins moved to Monticello where he has since lived. He was a member of Franklin Post No. 256 GAR. The funeral services will be held Thursday with burial in Monticello cemetery. Mr. Adkins is survived only by a number of nephews and nieces.
