Francis Brown
Treasures of Pioneer History, Vol.4, p.454
Francis Brown was born in Ridgway, Orleans County, New York, November 2, 1827. When Francis was eighteen years of age he joined the Mormon Battalion. His mother and the other children went on to Salt Lake, the father apparently never joined the Latter-day Saint Church.
When the Battalion boys had completed the gruelling trek to the West Coast many were in desperate circumstances, and Francis, sick and in need of help, married an indian girl by the name of Magell. They stayed some years in California where two children were born to them, George Washington Brown, born in 1850; and Ellen in 1852. Here Francis became acquainted with Elizabeth Burch Potter who had recently left her husband, Arnold Potter. She was the mother of three children. Francis was coming to Utah so Elizabeth left California with her family in company with the Brown family in 1858. Elizabeth was expecting Arnold Potter's child and Magell was expecting another child. On the way to Utah they experienced many hardships. When the families reached St. George, Utah, both babies were born about the same time. Magell named her child Mamie, but the mother died shortly after and was buried in St. George. The baby was given to a family living there. Elizabeth Potter's baby was, also, a girl whom they named Lisa Ann.
Francis married Elizabeth while in St. George and went on toward Salt Lake. They lived in what was then called Dover, Sanpete County, and Francis, Jr., was born there September 18, 1861. They also had a girl, Rosella, born December 27, 1865 at Murray, Utah.
Francis was hauling logs from Cottonwood Canyon with several other men when they were caught in a snowslide on the 26th of December, 1872. His body was not recovered until spring.
