Ms Edwards was a free spirit and a very independent minded person. Even though she walked with the assistance of crutches in her later years and had failing sight, she still managed to do her own shopping and housework.

She was slow to warm up to someone, and was basically quiet and unassuming. I believe it took her a little longer to warm up to me, maybe because I was a Yankee and an outsider, but she eventually did. We spent many a day chatting on her front porch and occasionally went to town together doing various things.

Ms. Edwards also had a sweet tooth, and she really liked Church's Fried Chicken. She was also an animal lover and was especially fond of dogs.

When Ms. Edwards was a young girl, she and her family resided roughly 4 miles east of the community of Kurthwood, Louisiana. Kurthwood was a sawmill town at the time, with a store and a theater. A train ran a short distance behind their home, back and forth to Kurthwood. She and her mother and brother would flag down the train and catch a ride to and from Kurthwood.

When Ms. Edwards was a young woman, she and a cousin would go to Kurthwood and change the boys ten cents for a dance, which was fairly common at that time. This was a fond memory for her as she enjoyed dancing and music. Who wouldn't like making a little money while also doing something they enjoy?

Beulah eventually married to Prudhomme Edwards, who was born on February 5, 1910 in Louisiana and died in November of 1972. Prudhomme was the son of Wood Edwards, # 21542288, and Matilda Rachal, # 21081412.

For many years, Prudum and Beulah resided in a home they built together on the land she inherited from her parents. This is also where they raised their son, David, and they owned several acres of land.

Beulah and Prudum later divorced, though it seems they still maintained occasional contact with one another. Ms. Edwards told me that he passed away in a fire, but I cannot recall the exact circumstances of his death. It seems to me that there was an issue with a gas leak in his home.

Beulah and David continued to share the home in Kurthwood for several years after. Sadly, she and David had a falling out and parted ways, but she always spoke highly of David and how much he meant to her.

As her health further declined and she was in the hospital, she asked for the soft peppermint candies, which she was very fond of. The last thing she asked me for was cold pear juice, which the hospital provided. I cannot describe the pleasure she got from sipping on that juice. I will always remember that.

Ms. Edwards suffered from kidney failure and passed away at Byrd Regional Hospital a short time after this visit. She is, and will remain, fondly remembered.

Beulah Edwards

Graveside services for Mrs. Beulah Edwards, 89, of Leesville will be held at 1 p.m. today, March 13, in the Welcome Cemetery in Simpson. Arrangements are under the direction of the Labby Memorial Funeral Home of Leesville.

Mrs. Edwards died Monday, March 11, in Leesville. Survivors include one son, David Lee Edwards.

*NOTE: David Lee Edwards was reported to have passed away on or shortly before July 2, 2003 in the Baton Rouge area. I am going by personal recollection due to the fact that a call I received concerning this was on the same day as my father's services.

From what I can recall from speaking to his mother, David was born around 1958. Word is he was married. No knowledge of any children.

UPDATE: I have located David. His death date on his stone is July 4, 2003, but I really could have sworn he passed sometime between June 27 (when my father passed) and July 2 (when my father was interred).
