Mary Jane Hancock was born in Plattsburgh, Clinton, New York [according to her death record]. Her mother was Hannah Peters. Mary Jane lived in Plattsburgh prior to removing to Starksboro in about 1880.

Her first spouse was George Fielders, who was born in England and with whom she had resided in the home of Minor & Malah Martin at the of the 1850 Plattsburgh Census. George and Mary Jane had at least eleven children together. George died of liver disease on October 13, 1892 in Huntington.

Five years later, Mary Jane married Leslie Voras Knight on October 10, 1897 in Huntington, VT. Leslie was already currently married. He had abandoned his wife Hattie [Martin] and daughter Maud Knight in Illinois. His lawful wife Hattie, 30 years younger than him, petitioned the court for a divorce, and Leslie was then arrested by the Sheriff on bigamy charges. Leslie posted $500 bail and was released to face the charges. Mary Jane stuck with him despite this background.

Mary Jane died of heart disease on 7 Feb 1904 in Shelburne, Chittenden, Vermont, United States.
