He was the son of David Skeels III (1813-70) and Mary Ann Hungerford (1816-57) of Highgate, VT. He Enlisted at the age of 22 on 25 Aug 1863 as a Private at Danube, NY. He was promoted to Full Corporal on 26 Sep 1863 and was enlisted in Company B, New York 16th Heavy Artillery Regiment on 26 Sep 1863. He mustered out on 21 Aug 1865 at Washington, DC. He was married to Lois L. Gotham.
