Harry Puffer was a farmer, living on the farm started by his grandfather. He was married with four young children and had always suffered from severe mood swings and "melancholy". In early 1923 his condition worsened and he stopped talking to neighbors and became more violent. His mental illness progressed to the point where he ended up taking his own life and the life of his wife. His eldest daughter was away taking the middle two children to school at the time, with the youngest being left at home. He was unharmed, but ran from the house to tell his sister about what happened when she returned.
There are two death dates recorded for him, 21 Sep 1923, and 1 Nov 1923.
