Text: Howard Pacholke, of Eastlake, is an old hand at Valentine gifts. Early this week, he bought his already, and was at home waiting for the most important day of the year. Howard and his wife Ethel, both 88, will celebrate 69 years of marriage and romantic memories. They got married on Valentine's Day, 1918. Does Howard Pacholke remember the first time he kissed his wife? You bet he does. "It was in what was Willow Park, in Euclid. We were on a May walk. She had made such beautiful sandwiches, so delicious. I believe that was the time I gave her a kiss. For those egg sandwiches." At the time, Pacholke had other girlfriends, "but they didn't knock me down like she did." This year, the Pacholkes will celebrate with a Valentine's Day dinner with their grandchildren. Why did they choose Valentine's Day to marry? "That's a good question. We were so much in love, we thought we'd just tie the knot on Valentine's Day...You Know, I remember someone once told me, "It'll never last.'" That was 69 years ago. Howard was the son of "Albert" Pacholke and Anna Nehls. He was the father of Howard, Ethel and Wayne.
