Obituary printed in the Philadelphia Inquirer, dated 14 July 1880, p. 8, Titled:"The Seaside, A Young Bather Out of His Depth":
Bergen Point, NJ, July 13-
About eleven AM today Harry Barney, aged twelve, the son of Nathan Barney, of Bayonne city, in company with several other small boys from the Latourelle House, went bathing in the kills in front of that hotel. He ventured beyond the limit of safe bathing. Unable to swim back, and having no sufficiant assistance at hand, he was drowned. The body was found near the place where he sank. Efforts at resuscitation were made unavailingly.
