He was born to William and Alma Clark Carpenter.
He attended the Star and Delaney schools near Grangeville. and graduated from Grangeville High School in 1936.

Following graduation he attended the University of Idaho, and graduated in 1943 with a degree in agriculture. After graduation he began serving in the Army. His Army infantry training was at Ft. Benning, Ga. He also was stationed at Camp Wheeler, Ga., and Camp Blanding, Fla. He was sent to Italy in early 1944.

Following his active duty, he again entered the UI to begin working on a master's degree.


He enlisted in the U.S. Army in February 1943, serving in Italy, France and Germany with the 179th Infantry. He received the Bronze Star and a recommendation for a battlefield commission.

He was discharged in November 1945, then joined the U.S. Army Reserves. He served with the reserves until 1965.

He was commander of the Grangeville National Guard unit from 1953 to 1961. He retired in 1965 with the rank of major.

He was a police officer for the city of Grangeville from 1960 to 1979, retiring after being chief of police for five years.

He married Leona Daugherty on Jan. 7, 1946. He began working as the county agent at Council, Idaho. They later divorced.

In 1952 he returned to Grangeville to take over the family farm.

He married Dorothy Altman June 11, 1979, at Boise. She survives at the family home in Grangeville.

He was a member and past commander of American Legion, Post No. 37, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3530. He was also a member of the Grangeville Elks Lodge and a life member of the Idaho Peace Officers Association.

In addition to his wife, his survivors include two sons, Fred Carpenter of Lewiston and Jeff Carpenter of McKinney, Texas; a daughter, Rosalyn Bentz of Lewiston; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother.
