John Magrath fought in the 1798 Irish Revolution and came to Charleston shortly thereafter. He became the president of the St. Patrick's Benevolent Society in 1817and continued in office until 1849 when he resigned due to ill health. The society owed its existence during its first 32 years in great measure to his able leadership.
