Ernest was the son of Joshua Francis and Emma Jane Merritt Pridgen. He was the grandson of George Washington and Mary Elizabeth Merritt Pridgen and Slone and Sophronia Curry Merritt.

He was married to Nollie Mae Wooten. She was the daughter of Bryant Lee (1961-1903) and Ellen Harper Wooten(1864-1907). She was the granddaughter of Bryant Benjamin and Susannah Passmore Wooten and George Jacob and Sarah Paulk Harper.
