Son of the late Oscar Harrison Wilkes and Julia Alice Shine Wilkes, he was a member of First Christian Church of Daytona Beach, FL. He also a member of the Daytona Beach Yacht Club, Elks Lodge #1141, where he was a life member, the Halifax Club and the Halifax Area Kiwanis Club. He was a retired salesman and manager with McFarland Furniture Company after 37 years with the firm. He enjoyed woodworking and fishing. He married Marie Floyd on August 9, 1930, in West Point, Clay County, MS. She preceded him in death on September 23, 1978. He married Cecilla Madeline Zieglar Meyer on January 7, 1979, in Daytona Beach. He was survived by his wife, Cecilla; a brother, William Shine Wilkes; three children (all adopted in 1952), Shelburn Elliott Manning Wilkes (Rita), Daniel Lee Manning Wilkes (Lynne) and Rita Gail Manning Wilkes Freeman (Pete); five grandchildren, Susan Gail Wilkes Feindt, Thomas Lee Wilkes, Gwen Marie Freeman Fabulich, Cindy Gail Freeman and Meghan Jane Wilkes; and an extended family of relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by an adopted son, Jon Francis Wilkes, who died in 1950. His funeral was held May 26, 1992, at First Christian Church of Daytona Beach, FL, with The Rev. E. Joseph Hood officiating along with an Elks Memorial Service. Cause of death: ruptured abdominal aorta aneurysm. He was known to Shelburn, Dan and Rita Gail as "Daddy Wilkes."
