Cottonwood Falls – The funeral for J. Richard Barrett, 81, of Chase County, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Brown-Bennett-Alexander Funeral Home at Cottonwood Falls. The Rev. Ellie Foster of the Cottonwood Falls United Methodist church will conduct the service. The private family burial will be in Miller Cemetery, near Cottonwood Falls. The family will meet friends from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions to the Emporia Senior Center and the church may be sent to the funeral home.

Mr. Barrett died February 7, 1999, at Newman Hospital.

He retired from farming in 1991 and moved to Emporia.

J. Richard Barrett, the son of Raymond and Mabel Adele Hunter Barrett, was born November 19, 1917, at the Barrett Farm in Chase County. He attended school in Cottonwood Falls and graduated from Chase County High School in 1935.

He married Mary Belle DeMoss on March 27, 1942, in rural Cottonwood Falls.

Mr. Barrett was a member of the United Methodist Church in Cottonwood Falls; board member of Chase County Elementary School in 1954 and 1955; president of the Farm Bureau in 1959 and 1960; vice president of the Farm Bureau in 1975 and 1976; Chase County commissioner from 1961 to 1964' county chairman of the Republican Party from 1976 to 1981; president 10 years and vice president two years of the Over 40 Club at the Emporia Senior Center; and worked with the Elder Citizen Club at the Emporia Recreation Center.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Raymond Barrett of Elmdale; four daughters, Carol Wilson of Cottonwood Falls, Martha Knoblock of Emporia, Pat Applegate of Spring Hill and Mary Helen Laney of Riverton, Wyo; a sister, Dorothy Nixon of Emporia; a brother, Glendon Barrett of Cottonwood Falls; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. A sister, Bernice Nelson, and a brother, Russell Barrett, died earlier.
