George Thomas Moore was born on 1 December 1823 in Pike County, Illinois to Jacob and Polly A. Burns Moore. There were eight siblings in his family; H. William, Temperance R.(Bryant), Nancy C. (Allison), Francis Marion, Peggy Jane (died young), Josepheus V. B., Luthera (Luthary) (Cox), and Mary Ann (Rose).

George married Martha Greathouse, daughter of John L. and Catherine (Hoover) Greathouse, on 22 October 1844 in Pike County, Illinois. There were nine children born of their union. The children were John L., Mary Catherine (McKellip), Martha (Badgley), Sarah Ann "Sallie" (Mosier),
Jacob C. "Jake," Henry Francis "Frank," George Thomas Jr., and twins William C. and Agnus Eveline Pendecille Moore (Lockaby).
