ORION TWP. - Studious and a good kid. Those were the words used to describe Thomas Ralph Miller by Lake Orion Schools Superintendent Christine Lehman.

Miller, who had just graduated Friday from Lake Orion High School, was killed in a traffic accident Tuesday morning.

"Our hearts go out to the family," she said. "What a tragic loss."

According to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, the 18-year-old Clarkston resident was behind the wheel of a 2003 Ford Mustang heading north on Joslyn Road.

Authorities say Miller passed another northbound vehicle, which was being driven by a friend, on a curve in the roadway.

As he was passing his friend, Miller had to swerve off the road to avoid hitting a 2007 Dodge Durango that was driven by Orion resident Troy Milam, who was heading south on Joslyn Road, say police.

Miller lost control of his car on the southbound shoulder of the road, went into a ditch and struck a culvert, deputies said.

The car then crossed back over Joslyn Road, left the roadway again and rolled over before hitting a tree.

Miller, who was not wearing his seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene, deputies said.

Milam, who was wearing his seat belt, wasn't injured.

The accident remains under investigation.

Lehman said Miller was an honor student and had been enrolled in many of the school's advanced classes.
