William Riley Mills enlisted at Gainesville, Florida in April 1862 as a private in Company D, 7th Florida Volunteer Infantry and served in the Army of Tennessee under General Joseph Johnston. He received his Parole at the surrender of Johnston's army near Greensboro, North Carolina on April 26, 1865. His only injury he reported during the war was a sprained ankle.
