Hall of Fame Rock Musician and Songwriter. A bassist and vocalist, he was a founding member of the seminal music group The Grateful Dead. Born Phillip Chapman Lesh, he was influenced by jazz greats Miles Davis and John Coltrane which led to his learning to play the trumpet during his mid teenage years. After dropping out of Berkeley, he landed a job as an engineer at a local radio station. Lesh's meeting with Jerry Garcia led to the formation of the music group The Warlocks (later changed to the Grateful Dead). After the group's disbanding, Lesh went on to record a number of solo albums before suffering from issues which hindered his vocal ability. In 1994, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Grateful Dead. In later years, his health declined as he endured liver ailments and prostate cancer.
