Olympic Champion. She was a German hurdler who started her sporting career in May 1961 when she was admitted to the Halberstadt sports school. She achieved her first significant success at the Children's and Youth Spartakiade with a victory in the 80-meter hurdles in 1966. She won the gold medal in the inaugural 100-metre hurdles event at the 1972 Summer Olympics held in Munich, Germany. She was the first East German Olympic Champion in this event. She also won a silver medal at the 1971 European Championships and a gold medal at the 1974 European Championships. During her career, she won 11 national titles and set 20 world records. Her last competitive appearance came at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal.
