John Blakeney Dies
News received here that John Blakeney died in San Antonio last Saturday night. Mr. Blakeney was one of the pioneers of San Saba town and loved by our people. W. H. Blakeney, a son living on China Creek, went to be with the family last week. No details have been received in San Saba.

Obituary
John W. Blakeney, aged 78 years, Confederate veteran and pioneer resident of San Saba, died January 29, at his home in San Antonio. Interment was in the Confederate Cemetery. The Albert Sydney Johnston Camp of the Confederate Veterans holding services at the grave. Bishop J. S. Johnson, who for many years had visited San Saba, himself a soldier of the lost cause, also read the Episcopal service.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Sophia Blakeney, and six children; Mrs. Albert Rose, C. H. Blakeney, and Mrs. E. S. O'Reilly all of San Antonio, W. H. Blakeney of San Saba, Mrs. Leonard Doughty of Austin and John H. Blakeney of Mexico City.
Mr. Blakeney was born in Marengo County, Alabama, May 10, 1846. At the outbreak of the Civil War he left school in Mobile and enlisted in the Eleventh Alabama Infantry at the age of fifteen years. He fought with Gen Robert E. Lee during the four years of the war with the Army of Northern Virginia.
He took part in some of the most desperate battles of the war and his name appears on the roll of Lee's army surrendered at Appomattox. In the fight of the crater at Petersburg, one of the bloodiest contests of the war, Mr. Blakeney was shot through the lung. He was present at the battles of the Wilderness, Sharpsburg, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor and Gettysburg. He was probably one of the last survivors of the famous Pickett's charge which marked the high water mark of the Confederacy at Gettysburg.
After the war Mr. Blakeney came to Texas, first settling in Colorado county where he married Miss Sophia Boch. In 1875 he moved to San Saba where he made his home for nearly forty years. In recent years he had made his hom in San Antonio.
Mr. Blakeney was a splendid type of the American citizen who labored to plant civilization and order in the frontier of Texas in the turbulent days following the war. In San Saba he was known and loved by the entire citizenship and counted his friends by his acquaintances. The night was never too dark nor too cold for John Blakeney to go anywhere for a friend. His heart was as tender as a woman's, his sympathies as generous as a saint's and yet he was a rugged, manly man among men. May peace be with his ashes and angels dwell with is soul.

Note: Regarding birth year in the above obit & headstone, according to John's siblings ages and additional records, John was born 1843. John was age 17 on the 1860 census. Click on his father Robert Hollie Blakeney's link to see siblings, parents marriage date and etc.
