Betty Joy Hollaway passed away and met with her heavenly Father on January 27, 2008.

She was born July 8, 1930, in Shreveport, LA. She graduated from Bryd High School and attended Centenary College in Shreveport.

She married her high school sweetheart, Cuba Hollaway, on June 14, 1957, and they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with their children in Louisiana last June.

Betty and family lived several years in Newcastle, WY. She obtained her B.A. degree at Black Hills Teacher's College in Spearfish, SD.

They moved to Colorado Springs in 1964 where they maintained their home for over 40+ years. There, she earned her Masters Degree at The Colorado College. Betty began her teaching career in Ellicott, CO, where she taught for two years. She then taught for over twenty years at Jefferson Elementary School in Colorado Springs before her retirement.

Betty was an exceptional teacher who loved her students and her colleagues in the teaching profession. After her retirement, she became active as a volunteer member of the Assistance League in Colorado Springs where she spent many years and countless hours participating in the functions and ongoing projects of the organization. She cherished her involvement in the Bargain Box, School Bell, and Kids on the Block.

Since 2004, because of health concerns for Betty, she and her husband resided with their daughter in Virginia, and then in Louisiana, where the low attitude considerably improved her comfort level. They continued to keep and maintain their family home in Colorado Springs.

A loving wife, devoted mother, and thoughtful caring friend, Betty gave much joy to others. Her positive attitude and love for life was contagious and she inspired many lives forever.

She is survived by her husband of 50+ years, her children Joe Walters and Rebecca Hollaway, her daughter-in Law, Kim Nation-Walters, grandchildren, Lindsay Walters, John Walters and his wife Sarah, and her sister Sarah Harrison. Honoring Betty's wishes, she was cremated.

Memorial Services were held Saturday, June 7, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. at the First Congressional United Church of Christ, 20 East Saint Vrain Street, Colorado Springs, CO 80903. A reception at the church will follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Assistance League of Colorado Springs, 318 E. Cimarron Street, Colorado Springs, CO 80903.

Condolences may be sent to the family at 8916 Highway 165, Pollock, LA 71467.
