Mary Clark Cannell died June 11th, 2008, in Alamogordo, New Mexico. Mary was born Mary Louise Clark on May 5th, 1919 in Woodstock, Ohio.

Her parents were Herbert Benton Clark and Ruby Winifred Smith Clark. Two older sisters, Clariette and Winifred (Sis) preceded her in death.

She attended Science Hill School in Shelbyville, Kentucky, and later graduated from Wellesley College in Massachusetts. She met Frank Walker Cannell, the love of her life, at the Dartmouth Winter Carnival. They were married in Arlington, Massachusetts on June 17th, 1941.

Mary and Frank were very active in their community after moving to Colorado Springs for their son's health in 1950. They attended the Black Forest Community Church, and Mary started girl scouting in Black Forest, serving as leader of both Brownie and Girl Scout troops.

She was on the Wagon Wheel Council. She also served as a Cub Scout leader. Together, Frank and Mary helped form a new school district, District 20, joining their community of Black Forest with the families living on the newly formed United States Air Force Academy.

On retiring to the city of Colorado Springs, Mary and Frank were active in reading programs for at risk elementary school children, serving as tutors at the Literary Center for many years. Mary and Frank also helped found the Vista Grande Community Church in Colorado Springs and both were very active in the church.

Her beloved husband, Frank, died on January 18th, 2002. Widowed, Mary later moved to Yuma, Arizona, and resided at Desert Rose Retirement Residence. She made many friends there, and had more time to spend with her son, Bob, and his family. After serious medical problems, she moved to Alamogordo, New Mexico to be near her daughter, Becky, and to reside at the Casa Arena Blanca nursing home. She is survived by her daughter, Rebecca Browne of Alamogordo, and her son, Robert Clark Cannell, M.D. of Yuma. She is also survived by five grandchildren, and fourteen (one due July 4th) great-grandchildren.

Interment will be next to her husband, Frank, at the Shrine of Remembrance at 1730 East Fountain Boulevard. Memorial service will be held at Vista Grande Community Church in Colorado Springs at 5460 North Union Boulevard on Sunday, June 22nd at 2:00 p.m.
