RATH, Robert Glenn, 91, died June 7, 2008 in Richmond, VA.
He was born in Flint, Michigan in 1916 and grew up in Chicago, Illinois, where he attended Northwestern University.
He was honorably discharged as a staff sergeant from the U.S. Army at the end of World War II.
He later attended American University in Washington, D.C. where he was director for procurement and production in the budget office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense.
After retiring, Mr. Rath volunteered his time preparing income tax returns for ill and disabled people and tutoring students preparing for their high school equivalency tests.
He also discovered a talent for water color painting, for which he won several coveted ribbons.
Mr. Rath was well loved for his many kindnesses to family, friends, and strangers and for his sense of humor which was evident even in his last days.
Mr. Rath is survived by Joyce, his loving wife of 68 years, living in Richmond; two daughters, Janet R. Hutchinson, Richmond and Nancy R. Crippen, Stafford, VA; seven grandchildren, Jennifer Ostlind (husband, Steve) Houston, Texas, James Hutchinson Jr. (fiance, Erika Lesser) Brooklyn, N.Y., Aaron Crippen, Augusta, GA, Steven Hutchinson, Austin, Texas, Christian Crippen (wife, Jenn) Williamsburg, VA, Elizabeth Hutchinson, Weissport, PA, Anna Gonsorcik, Stafford; and four great-grandchildren, Logan, Erik, Kyle and Aryanna.
He will be fondly remembered by the generous staff of Brighton Gardens who cared for him with love and respect during his final days.
Interment was at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, VA.
