WORTHINGTON, Iowa -- Rose Marie (Gaul) Dunkel, 81, of Worthington, died Thursday, June 12, 2008, at Heritage Manor, Dubuque.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 16, at St. Paul's Catholic Church, Worthington, with the Rev. Donald Hertges officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday, June 15, at Kramer Funeral Home, Dyersville, where a parish scripture service will be at 6 p.m.

She was born on Sept. 20, 1926, in Worthington, daughter of Peter and Angeline (Oberbroeckling) Gaul. She attended rural school and St. Paul's High School in Worthington.

She married Bernard "Barney" Dunkel on Jan. 12, 1949, at St. Paul's Church in Worthington, Iowa; he preceded her in death in 1991.

Together they farmed until their retirement when they moved to Monticello.

Rose enjoyed sewing and making many quilts, gardening, canning and playing cards. She loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be missed by all her family and friends.

Surviving are her children, Judy Roling, of Dyersville, Daniel (Elaine) Dunkel, of Covington, Kenneth (Nancy) Dunkel, of Dyersville, Mary Jane (Duane) Pruett, of Apache Junction, Ariz., Donald (Dee) Dunkel, of Marion, Jerry (Vicki) Dunkel, of Dyersville, Joseph (Linda) Dunkel, of Worthington, and Edward (Michelle) Dunkel, of Peosta; 19 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; her step-mother, Clara Gable; a son, Michael; a grandchild, Amber Dunkel; brothers, Clarence, who was killed in World War II, Leo, John, and two brothers in infancy; and sisters, Annie Loecke and Lucille Graham.
