James Walter "Jimmie" New, age 83, of Clovis, NM died Thursday, June 12, 2008, at Farwell Convalescent Center in Farwell, TX. Services will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, June 16, 2008, at The Chapel, 1500 Thornton, with Rev. Margot Thompson officiating. Burial will follow at San Jon Cemetery with Military Honors. Pallbearers will be Ron Garret, Jim May, Val Cortez, Carl Bakley, Jim McElroy, and Everett McCormick. The family will be at the home of Jamie and Tina New, 1421 Piedmont Dr., Clovis, NM 88101.
Jimmie was born October 13, 1924, to Cecil and Nora Belle New in Glen Rio, NM. He lived and went to school in San Jon, NM through the 8th grade. He left school to work at Cutter Carr Flying Service at the Tucumcari Airport from May 1942 to February 1943, Jimmie joined the US Army Air Corp and was included in the largest group of volunteers to join the service from Quay County. Volunteers totaled 15. After training in El Paso, TX and Wichita Falls, TX he was sent overseas on January 17, 1944, landing in England. He toured in England, France, and Germany. Jimmie returned to the states in December 1945, after being discharged.
Jimmie married Clara B. Morris in Tucumcari and moved to Dalhart, TX where he worked on the railroad for a few months, then moved back home to Tucumcari and began working for General Sign Co. In 1947, Jimmie went to the Texas School of Neon in Denton, TX. In 1949, Jimmie and his wife moved to Clovis where he worked for Clovis Sign Service. Jimmie continued to work for Clovis Sign Service until 1963, when he left and started his own company, "Trace Sign Company" with a partner. In 1964, Jimmie and his partner purchased Clovis Sign Service and operated it as a Corporation until 1972, when Jimmie bought out his partner. In 1990 ,he turned it over to his son. After his first wife's death he married Wilma Allen January 2, 1997, in Clovis, NM.
He was a member of Trinity Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge #40 AF and AM, Shriners, lifetime member of VFW Post 3280, and a former member of Keystone Chapter #27 order of Eastern Star. He was a neon bender and artist, and he loved drawing, painting, windmills, and photography. He was a fisherman for life. He spent many years with his family at Conchas Dam and had a fish story for any one, this was his passion. "Paca" was a wonderful grandfather to Shannon and Brannon. He will be missed for his smile and sense of humor.
Survivors include his wife, Wilma New of the home; one son, James New and his wife Tina of Clovis, NM; one sister, Loyce Keller and her husband Fred of Pratt, KS; one brother, Bobby New and wife Peggy of Pratt, KS; two grandchildren, Shannon Atencio and husband Will, and Brannon New and wife Marni; and one great-granddaughter, Kaya New and two more on the way, and his caregiver and trusted friend Juanita Cortez.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Clara; his parents, Cecil and Nora Belle; two sisters, Lorraine and Evelyn; and one brother, Tommy.
