Jan was born June 21, 1929 in Pleasant Hill, LA, the youngest child with two older brothers and four older sisters. She graduated from Jennings High School in 1946 and married Willis W. Meeks on June 20, 1948. A devoted wife for 53 years, Jan was a loving mother and homemaker for her two sons, Mike and Steve, owning her own beauty shop in her home for ten years. Jan and Willis lived in Shreveport for 32 years and were active members of Morningside Baptist Church. In 1980 they moved to Grand Cane and joined Gloster Baptist Church, where Jan was a member of the Willing Workers Sunday School Class.
Jan was preceded in death by her parents, John Oliver and Lucille Sanders; her brothers, Cecil Sanders and J. L. Sanders; and her sisters, Eva Marie Jamison and Neva Lee Peacock.
She is survived by her husband, Willis W. Meeks, and her sons and their wives, Michael W. and Judy Meeks of Columbus, GA and Dr. Stephen F. and Sehoy Meeks of Cypress, TX. Her grandchildren, of whom she was always very proud, are Jennifer Meeks Haessig and her husband, Walter of Dallas, TX, Timothy Meeks of Houston, TX, Christopher Meeks from Atlanta, GA and Mandy Meeks of College Station, TX. She also is survived by her sisters, Jean Fleniken Blount of Mansfield and Lenora Elmira Boyce, formerly of Shreveport, and a host of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Jay Burford, Sonny Hall, Gus Hall, Don Eakin, Skip Loupe and Dave Means.
The family wishes to express special thanks to Dr. Charles Nash, Dr. James May, Dr. Holliday, Dr. Diedre Barfield, Dr. Donna Walker, Kate Young, and the kind and caring staff of the sixth floor Oncology and ICU units of Christus Schumpert Hospital. The family also expresses deepest gratitude to Robyn Watkins, Valerie Johnson, and Cathy Nash of Christus Schumpert Hospice for their compassionate and professional care and to their many friends and family for their prayers and support.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Building Fund of Gloster Baptist Church.
