Bette Lou (Benter) Martin, 80, passed away peacefully at her home in Colorado Springs on Thursday, June 5, 2008, surrounded by her loving family.

She was the beloved wife of Carl Franklin Martin for 57 years, prior to his death on March 31st of this year.

Bette was born May 21, 1928 in Burke, SD to Dale and Lula (Overton) Benter and graduated as valedictorian from Walthill High School (Nebraska) in 1945. She attended Wayne State College and graduated from Iowa State University in 1949 with a bachelor's degree in Restaurant/Hotel Management.

Bette met Carl while attending Iowa State University and they were married in Walthill, July 10, 1950. Their faithful and undying love produced five sons. Bette worked at home raising their five rambunctious sons while Carl served his country for 26 years as an officer in the U.S. Air Force.

Bette's many hobbies included: canning; putting up jam; sewing clothes, costumes and bedding; ceramics; candle making; tiling; needle work; astonishing cake and cookie decorating and collecting Hummel's and plates.

Bette will be remembered for her impish sense of humor, love for Carl and their family, her wonderful artistic talent, her fabulous cooking and her unique sense of style.

She is survived by her sons (and wives): Dean (Carol Blaney) of Bellingham, WA; Dale (Linda) of Bethlehem, PA; Don (Martie) of Lino Lakes, MN; Dan (Margaret) of Brookings, SD; Dru (Cathy) of Ramstein, Germany; two brothers, Robert Benter (Adele) of Greeley, CO; Richard Benter of Newport Beach, CA; 18 grandchildren and many dear extended family members and friends.

A memorial service will be held in Walthill (Nebraska) at the United Methodist Church on Thursday, July 24, 2008 at 4:00 p.m., followed by a meal.

A private interment of Bette and Carl's ashes at the Walthill Cemetery will be held prior to the memorial service.
