John Fulton Reynolds

Civil War Union Major General. One of the top Union Generals in the Civil War. Rose from commanding a brigade to commander for the Army of the Potomac's I Corps. Fought in Battles of Second Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. He was offered command of the Army of the Potomac in June 1863 when Gen. Joseph Hooker resigned, but he turned down the offer because he thought he would not be given a free hand in directing Army operations. He then willingly subordinated himself to George Meade, who was given command of the Army and was junior in rank to Reynolds. He directed the left wing of the Army as it approached Gettysburg to support Gen. John Buford's hard-pressed cavalry troopers. While posting elements of the famed "Iron Brigade" he was shot and instantly killed in a Confederate volley, thus making him both the first and the highest ranking General to die in the engagement.
