Funeral: 4 p.m. Thursday at University Christian Church in Fort Worth. Burial: 10 a.m. Friday at Greenwood Memorial Park. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Greenwood Funeral Home.
Pallbearers: John L. DeGrand, David DeGrand, Jack DeGrand, Bryan Lake, Matthew Lake Berry, Harold Muckleroy, Steve Patterson and Roger Neely.
Hilda was born to Dr. and Mrs. G.B. Lake Sr. in Crockett on Feb. 16, 1930. She grew up and was educated in Crockett. In the fall of 1947, she enrolled at Texas Christian University and on the day of her arrival on campus, she met Gilbert. Romance blossomed, and within a week they were engaged. Their 58-year- long marriage began in 1949. She and Gilbert spent many happy years from 1949 to 1971, ministering Christian Church congregations in Camden, Ark., Ayden, N.C., Galena Park, Hereford and Shreveport, La. Over those years she embraced the role of minister's wife and joyfully worked as friend, counselor, leader and role model. Sons, David and Mark, arrived in 1952 and 1956.
In 1971, she and Gilbert moved to Fort Worth and she continued her church service through Texas Christian University, Brite Divinity School and University Christian Church, where she was an elder and trustee, among other capacities. In 1972, she fulfilled her promise to her parents that she would complete her college education and graduated from TCU with an education degree. She proceeded to a 10-year career as a teacher in the Crowley ISD.
Grandchildren, Mark, Elizabeth and Neely, came into the warm embrace of Mimi in the 1980s and received the unsurpassed gift of grandparenting from her and Big Daddy, who assured them that they were the most special children in the world.
Hilda was a prolific painter. Her art adorns the homes of many friends and family members. In her last years and up until weeks before her passing, she took Neely and Elizabeth to weekly painting lessons and helped them discover that they had a hidden talent passed down from Mimi.
Hilda was a 19-year breast cancer survivor. She undertook all of the therapy her physicians prescribed and followed their advice carefully. She continually beat the odds, outlived prognosis, encouraged her family and lived happily ever after.
Survivors: Husband, Gilbert; son, David and wife, Anita; son, Mark and wife, Robin; grandchildren, Mark, Elizabeth and Neely Davis, and Michael and Christopher Johnston; and sister, Nita DeGrand.
