DEATH OF MRS. CATHARINE LONG. Mrs. Catharine LONG and daughter, Blanche, and their guest, Miss CHILCOTT, of Pa., went out near Merrimac last Friday to visit at the SHAFFER home. Mrs. LONG was taken ill on Saturday morning but the doctor thought in no immediate danger.... Her death came unexpectedly Tuesday morning, about 3 o'clock. The remains were brought to the old home here last evening and funeral services will be conducted from there.

DEATH OF MRS. CATHERINE LONG. Mrs. Catherine LONG of this city died yesterday morning at the home of Jacob SCHAFER in Walnut township, whither she had gone for a visit Friday. She was taken suddenly ill, with symptoms of Pneumonia, shortly after her arrival, but it was not supposed that her condition was critical as late as Monday evening.
Mrs. LONG was the eldest of twelve children of the late Adam STEVER. She was born in Huntingdon County, Penn., in 1825 [Ed. note: headstone has 1827], and came to this county with her parents in May, 1844. She grew to womanhood on the old homestead just west of this city, and was married there to William LONG in 1850. They were the parents of six children, five of whom are now living -- Mrs. A. M. BRYANT and Geo. S. LONG in Colorado, William L., Clifford S., and Miss Blanche in this county.
Mr. LONG was clerk of the courts of Jefferson County for six terms, and the son, William L., also served two terms in the same capacity. Mrs. LONG and her family have had a prominent place in the affairs of Jefferson County.
Mrs. LONG had been a member of the Presbyterian Church of this city for many years, and was a most estimable woman in every relation of life. In her residence of sixty years in this community she has always held a high place in the affections of its people.
The death of Mrs. LONG is the fourth in the STEVER family in little more than a year. George, David H., and John W., three brothers, died within a few months in 1903, all from pneumonia. Five members only of this large family are now living, S.F., Miss Elizabeth and Miss Jane in this city, Mrs. S. L. GLASGOW in Seattle, Wash., and Mrs. Almira Stever Axline in Kansas.

She came to Iowa with her parents in 1844. On Mar. 7, 1850, she was married to Wm. LONG, and they made their home in Fairfield, where Mrs. LONG has since lived.
Seven children were born to this union, one of whom died in infancy. One daughter, Laura, died Feb. 22, 1880. Three sons and two daughters survive to mourn a mother's loss: George S. LONG, Trinidad, Col.; Wm. LONG, Clifford LONG, of Fairfield; Mrs. Alice M. BRYANT, of Minturn, Colo.; and Miss Blanche LONG of Fairfield. Also leaves four sisters and one brother.
