Lee Whiting, 99, Ortonville, died Wednesday, June 4, 2008.

Lee Whiting was born March 20, 1909 in Princeton, WI. At the age of 2 months, he traveled by rail with his parents, Fred and Orrilla (Briggs) Whiting, to this area (Ortonville MN) where they joined Lee's grandparents on the family farm 15 miles southwest of Ortonville. Lee attended school grades 1-8 at Big Tom School.

In 1930 Lee traveled to Wisconsin to visit his aunt and uncle. While on this trip he met his future wife, Dorothy Underwood. Lee and Dorothy were married in Rhinelander, WI, where he worked in a large lumber mill. In 1938, Lee and Dorothy moved to the Ortonville area, where Lee lived the remainder of his life.

Lee was a direct decendant of Nathaniel Whiting, who came to this country from England in 1635, settling in the Boston area. Lee's great grandfather, Mason Whiting served in the Civil War and his great, great, great, great grandfather, Major Caleb Whiting served in the Revolutionary War.

Lee is survived by children, Lloyd (Rosa) Whiting of Plymouth, MN, Velda (Wally) Hein of Remus, MI, Patricia (Mike) Bohlen of Milbank, SD, Connie (Bob) Lundin of Bismarck, ND; one sister, Beulah Benshoof of LeSeuer, MN; 10 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 71 years, Dorothy; 3 children, son Dale, daughter, Bonnie and son, LeRoy; 9 brothers and sisters; 1 great grandson, William Rombs.

Funeral services were June 7 in the Tabor United Methodist Church at Big Stone City with the Rev. Beth Conrad officiating.

Burial was in the Mound Cemetery. Pallbearers were Joseph Whiting, William Whiting, Matthew Bohlen, Michael Bohlen, Ronn Jansen and Bob Lundin.

Larson Funeral Home in Ortonville was in charge of arrangements.
