Robert first married Bertha E Bannister on 14 October 1928 in Los Angeles, California; they had two non-surviving children and Bertha died in 1936. Robert then married Grace Victoria Meissen on August 28, 1938 at St Mary's Catholic Church, corner of Fourth and Chicago Streets, Los Angeles, California. They had three sons: George (Corky) William Cash (1939), Richard (Chuck) Lawrence Cash (1941), and Donald (Donny) Lee Cash (1945).

Robert is buried not too far from his sister, Betty Oma Cash Tucker.
