Civil War Veteran

John Washington Smith was born to Joseph Garrett Smith and Matilda Roper, in Henry Co. GA. By 1880, he was living in Campbell Co. where he married Choannah Mildred Foster of Campbell Co. In Aug. 1862, he joined "Campbellton Volunteers" (35th GA Inf) and served until Feb. 22, 1865, when he was given a handwritten furlough at Petersburg, VA. He apparently couldn't make it back as he was not present at Appomatox. From family research, it is known that five brothers-in-law were with him in Co. E: James W. Silvey; Moses Foster; James Foster, and Daniel P.S. Childs. After 1880, he and his family migrated to Cass Co. TX, where the men worked at sawmills. After 1900-02, John migrated with his eldest son, Eliud Smith, to Hughes Co. OK, where he lived until he died at Butner, Oklahoma. His wife, Mildred is prob. bur Cass Co. TX, ca 1897; Sons, Eluid is bur. Wetumka; Arthur, prob. OKC; Rufus prob Texarkana area; Luther, bur. Kingsville, TX. A grandson is also bur. Wetumka.
