He was the fourth of six children born to David and Elizabeth (Whittemore) Austin. He was a veteran of the War of 1812. He married 7 February 1811 to Lydia Briggs and was the father of one son and four daughters. Silas was a member of the Maine Colony, having departed Jay, Franklin County for Rockton during the summer of 1838, accompanied by his son Henry S. Austin and two of his daughters. It is said that he initially claimed the southwest quarter of section seven but never obtained a deed for this land, nor did he and his son received a deed for the north half of the northeast quarter of section eighteen as so claimed by Edson Carr.
