John L. II, son of John L. Ruyle,I,& Polly Bird. married Lucy Dyer, Parents Unknown, 06 June 1818, Whitley Co.,TN. To this union were Born: Napolean,Mary,Martha, John L.,III,
Andrew,Peter,Amelia Permillia & Marion.

John's chances for obtaining an education were extremely limited, so he could only read and write his name. He was reared on a farm, and engaged in agricultural pursuits, in Sumner County as well as Davidson County, Tenn.
For eight years after his marriage, he remained in Tenn. engaged in farming; but being an anti-slavery man by instinct, though born in a slave state, he left his native state in order to find a home where his children might not be brought in contact with, or exposed to the influences of slavery. In 1823 he started for Illinois, and on the third of November of that year, without a single dollar in his possession, he arrived at Baumeister Creek, Morgan County. He removed to Greene County in 1830 and located in the Mt. Airy Precinct.
