Roman Catholic Cardinal. Roman born Giovanni Battista Lugari received his education at the Royal Roman University and later at the Pontifical Gregorian University of Rome, but despite having joined the ecclesiastical state, was ordained priest only at the age of forty nine on January 15, 1896. Named assessor and sub-promoter of the Faith for the Sacred Congregation of Rites on February 3, 1896, he was appointed privy chamberlain supernumerario of Pope Leo XIII three days days and was named promoter of the Faith on June 4 of the following year, receiving the title of domestic prelate of His Holiness. Canon of the chapters of the Patriarchal Liberian Basilica, the Patriarchal Lateran Basilica and the Patriarchal Vatican Basilica, Lugari was named auditor of His Holiness on April 22, 1901, promotor of the Faith in the canonization process of Joan of Arc that same year, and assessor of the Supreme Sacred Congregation of the Holy Office on January 11, 1902. Furthermore, he was appointed protonotary apostolic supernumerarium on February 2, 1902 and consultor of the Sacred Congregation of Rites on April 18, 1902. Pope Pius X created him cardinal deacon in the consistory of November 27, 1911 with the deaconry of Santa Maria in Portico. Lugari died on July 31, 1914 in his native Rome and was laid to rest inside the local Campo Verano Cemetery.
